People I'd Like to be Friends With

Hello, Internet!

So I’m creeping up on 20,000 followers (I know, right? I think most of you are Portuguese teenagers. Olá!, adolescentes Portugeuese!), and it’s made me wonder about what I can actually do with that. So while I don’t think this blog will ever be a source of any revenue (ads+tumblr don’t mix), I do like the idea of social capital, or using tumblr to make more friends and to share the things I love.

So with that said, I’d like to share this list of people I’d like to be friends with. Not just because I might meet them someday, but also because I think they’re cool and maybe you’d like to know about them. Here are three people I’d like to be friends with:

1. Aram Bartholl, inventor of the dead drop. Guerilla USB ports clandestinely embedded in the urban landscape in the name of art, exchange, and many other things.

2. Ze Frank. I’ve been watching The Show and A Show for a long time. I really admire how he’s become a professional blogger, creative consultant, organizer, and a bunch of other great stuff. This is my favorite of his videos (nsfw//language).

3. Marc Horowitz. I actually went to grad school with this person! In the same tiny building, at the same time! I think his socially engaged art projects are really funny and thoughtful. You might have heard of his project The Advice of Strangers, where he turned to his Twitter followers to all his life decisions for a month. He’s trying to raise money for a sick friend, and the video he made makes him look really likable.

VoiceThread - About - Features → voicethread.com

Woah, check out this cool collaborative tool:

With VoiceThread, group conversations are collected and shared in one place from anywhere in the world. All with no software to install.

A VoiceThread is a collaborative, multimedia slide show that holdsimages, documents, and videos and allows people to navigate slides and leave comments in 5 ways - using voice (with a mic or telephone), text, audio file, or video (via a webcam). Share a VoiceThread with friends, students, and colleagues for them to record comments too.

Users can doodle while commenting, use multiple identities, and pick which comments are shown through moderation. VoiceThreads can even be embedded to show and receive comments on other websites and exported to MP3 players or DVDs to play as archival movies.

“[F]irst there are programs I would eliminate. Obamacare being one of them but also various subsidy programs — the Amtrak subsidy, the PBS subsidy, the subsidy for the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities. Some of these things, like those endowment efforts and PBS I very much appreciate and like what they do in many cases, but I just think they have to stand on their own rather than receiving money borrowed from other countries, as our government does on their behalf.” —

Mitt Romney Says He Would Ax Arts Funding If Elected

I try to stay pretty neutral on the internet, but eliminating the NEA would be a catastrophe. Let’s hope it never happens.

PUBLIC ART AT HEART OF LOS ANGELES (HOLA): Public Art Superheroes → holapublicartproject.tumblr.com

Hey! Look at my students! Look how great they are!

holapublicartproject:

While our elementary-age students didn’t participate in the performance onstage, we didn’t want them to miss out on all the public art fun!
